This is the trial release of the first 1/4 of the Pilgrim Church. While we have taken every care, we are aware that there may be typos in the text. |
The pages have been kept small to enable quick downloading when accessed from the INDEX however this would make printing the information tedious. |
The Pilgrim Church was written by Mr E. H. Broadbent earlier this century. (1900s)
During the preparation of this page we have consulted the text of The Pilgrim Church from the edition published in 1935 by Pickering & Inglis in Great Britain. We also quote from the forward written by F.F. Bruce for the 1974 paperback edition: -
"The author, EDMUND HAMER BROADBENT (1861 - 1945),
spent much time, during a period of nearly fifty years, travelling in
Central and Eastern Europe, where he made the acquaintance of a
number of Christian groups, gathered in separation from established
churches of those lands and sometimes enduring no little persecution
on that account.
"As he enjoyed their fellowship, he
conceived the desire to know more about their origin and history, and
this led him to the course of intensive research which bore fruit in
The Pilgrim Church.
The works, both published and
unpublished, which provided him with his main sources of information
are listed in his preface and bibliography, not to mention his
footnotes.
". . .
"It has been held against it [the
book] that it includes within its scope some groups whose orthodoxy
was more than suspect - those, for instance, with whom Sir Steven
Runciman has dealt in The Medieval Manichee (1947).
"This
criticism was largely met in advance by the author when he pointed
out that much of the information about these groups comes from their
opponents, who had an interest in painting their beliefs and
practices in the blackest hues. .."
Web Page Editor's Notes contd..
The Pilgrim Church covers the history of many Christians and Movements started by the Holy Spirit who have endeavoured to hold true to the words of the Lord Jesus and His servants as recorded in the Scripture and revealed by the Holy Spirit. Starting with the close of Luke's "Acts of the Apostles" and continuing forward, Mr Broadbent has attempted to focus on the story of those believers who were outside of the systemised Catholic and then Roman church, it's descendants, and other State or 'Official' but un-biblical edifices.
The history is exciting, challenging and very revealing.

The Pilgrim Church Now!
As the book was written at a time when there was possibly a
greater command of the English language than perhaps is so common
today; and as many people who are able to access this web page speak
English as a second language, Glossary and
Information Notes, Maps, and Illustrations have been added
where ever they might help in the understanding of The Pilgrim
Church, we certainly have found them educational ourselves!
The
only alterations and editing which we have undertaken on the text
have been for clarity, and are normally [Ed. - obvious where they
occur].
The additional work which we have undertaken here is covered by copyright to protect it from the unscrupulous. It is our deep hope that this reproduction of Mr Broadbent's writtings in this form will serve not only a 'religious', but a great educational purpose as well - to the Glory of God through the Lord Jesus Christ.
